AquaTop THE WATER WHICH TURNS INTO SCREEN TOUCH INTERFACE (aksistech)

AquaTop Turns Your Bathtub Into A Touchscreen Display

There are plenty of gadgets that employ touchscreen technology nowadays. Not only do many of our smartphones and tablets include some kind of touch based interface, but even our fridges, our cars and our video game controllers let us interact using our fingertips. This is usually rather expensive as touch enabled glass and surfaces, along with the technology that powers it, don’t come cheap, nor does protecting those surfaces from the scratches that can stop them from working. However, a new project from Japan, called ‘AquaTop’ is a solution to these issues, using motion control and some intelligent programming to make touchscreens out of water.

The AquaTop Display allows users to leave their electronics on the shelf and turn their bath into an interactive and immersive surface. Using a Microsoft Kinect Depth camera, opaque bathwater, a projector, and a PC, the team has created a natural user interface.

AquaTop is made up in part by a vat of water (which has a powder added to it to make it opaque) and Kinect, the camera system used with Microsoft’s Xbox 360 games console to allow motion control based gaming. What’s key to making AquaTop work is that with touchscreens such as the Apple iPad or the touchscreen on your phone, no depth is available, as the glass surfaces of those devices don’t allow you to put your hand through them, unlike with water. One of the researchers who created the project, at the University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo had this to say, “This type of interaction is not capable with current impenetrable, rigid body, flat surfaces.” however, with the Kinect’s depth sensor, all of this is possible and its pretty amazing how japan is developing in the field of inventions.

This “touchscreen for your bathtub” is able to perform functions just like any other device. Users can zoom in using two fingers, as well as drag and drop by scooping up water with their hands.

The game mode allows users to float their hands above the surface to create a beam of light or put their palms together to create a ball of light that will then produce an even bigger ball of light. A waterproof speaker system can also be added for another dimension to the game.
here a video where you can the waters reponse while someone touches it.

Beyond creating a new and exciting way to bathe, the AquaTop aims to break down the barrier of a screen. It tries to create a more intuitive gaming experience, where users can control things in a more comprehensive and physical manner. the physical touch of  water with games completes the virtual reality in a manner.
While the AquaTop Display is still just a prototype, it’s exciting to think that soon enough we might be able to use more natural surfaces as  touchscreens.
